Captain Wes, the sea wolf
If you would like a different kind of sea excursion, we would be delighted to organise a traditional pirogue trip for you. The pirogue is a typical Mauritian wooden boat, similar to the English cutter or the 18th century French rowboat. Whenever the weather is suitable, it is preferable to switch off the small engine, which is usually equipped, in favour of its majestic sails. The view is worthy of a postcard cliché – and is increasingly rare as pirogue manufacturers and sailors can now be counted on the fingers of one hand. While there’s still time, take advantage of this treasure trove of locally made crafts to soak up Mauritian culture and prepare for a breathtaking ride in the lagoon by daylight or sunset.
At Veranda Paul and Virginie, you will meet Wesley, better known as “Captain Wes”. This lover of the sea, who comes from a family of fishermen from Grand Gaube, has been sailing the northern waters since his childhood. At the age of 4, his grandfather introduced him to fishing with a “bamboo golette”, and the sea has been his refuge ever since. In his fondest childhood memories, there were those lunches, his father coming back from his morning fishing with good fish that his mother would cook on a traditional wood fire to prepare the famous Mauritian curry, family traditions that he continues to perpetuate with his children. Wesley enjoys sharing these stories with his guests, showing them the authenticity and history of Mauritius while raising awareness about the preservation of our marine ecosystem.

Various water activities
For a unique underwater adventure, you can opt for snorkelling. As you swim among the clownfish and lionfish, you’ll take time to admire the beautiful corals (including the acropora florida and foliose montipora varieties) that are revealed beneath your feet.
