Kouler Moris : The New Colours of Tamarin Bay

posted by Veranda Resorts 25th September 2023 0 comments

Welcome to the artistic universe of Mauritius, where culture, creativity, and diversity come together to form a unique project: Kouler Moris. This innovative urban art project showcases local talents, fosters artistic expression, and promotes the cultural richness of Mauritius, with the aim of bringing colour into the lives of its community…

Veranda Tamarin actively supports this project, and we’ll reveal all the secrets below!

What was the goal of this project?

Kouler Moris is a project aimed at embellishing the main avenue leading to Tamarin Bay, so popular both with locals and passing tourists in the region. With the participation of key partners, Mauritian artists, and residents, a mural representing various aspects of Mauritius has been painted on the walls of this avenue, which now carries the history of our island.

The enhancement of this avenue would not have been possible without the involvement of the residents, who participated in the decision-making process and created a sense of ownership and responsibility towards the artwork created. This artistic project also aims to change the perception of this place, with its colorful streets attracting more attention from visitors and tourists.

Finally, the murals of Kouler Moris bear witness to the community’s commitment to urban art, environmental preservation, and the promotion of a culture of solidarity. The public can discover these unique artworks in person or through a virtual tour by scanning the associated QR code. A first in Mauritius!

What was each artist’s involvement?

Mélanie Pérès, Writer

“I play multiple roles in the Mauritian artistic scene. As part of Kouler Moris, I was asked to write to tell the story of Tamarin. This project was particularly close to my heart because I find my roots here. Putting words to the magic of this village means highlighting its inhabitants, landscapes, and essence. Being part of this adventure is reconnecting with my family and making them proud. On one hand, I had to craft the text in several iterations to find the right balance between reality and imagination. Making others dream was my biggest challenge. Shedding light on the facets of Tamarin: surfing, the mountains, salt, the shop, the waves, the sea, also required incorporating the essence of this place: the values of its inhabitants, what they cherish and preserve, its interculturality.”

Julien Quirin, Artistic Director

“I have always been fascinated by the visual world and its multiple facets. However, it’s the special effects in the cinematic world and digital art that have inspired me the most. Today, I use digital technology to create images and videos. I combine these elements to create animations using the latest technologies. My role in Kouler Moris is to digitalize the murals. The painted murals will come to life and tell a visual and musical story. By combining the works of the 4 artists in the project, we bring them to life on your phones.”

Rafiki, Singer

“My approach to composition is rooted in the art of sampling, which relies on music and sounds from the Mauritian cultural landscape. During my workshop, I demonstrated how one can manipulate samples to create something unique. For the composition of the soundtrack, I initially closely followed the script with Mélanie Pérès, who spent her entire childhood in Tamarin. Then, the demos that became the soundtrack of the project were inspired by the innocent energy of my children. This inspiration came to me during days of heavy rain at home, looking after them.”

David Rogers, aka Dévid, Painter and Illustrator

“Through my art, I aspire to help people break away from their daily routines. We, as a team, and the residents, tried to tell their story, what makes this place what it is today, and what its inhabitants are proud of. These themes are authentic and human; that’s the beauty of Tamarin. It is imperative to protect this authenticity, this charm, at a time when our island is experiencing rapid development… This project puts the spotlight back on what all Tamarin residents, I hope, will continue to share for many years to come: the bay.”

Feel Mauritius. Feel Mauritian. An authentic holiday experience by Veranda Resorts

posted by Veranda Resorts 8th September 2023 0 comments

Tired of copy-cut-paste holidays that feel the same, from one island to the other? Veranda Resorts invites you to take the roads least travelled to discover Mauritius. Feel Mauritius, Feel Mauritian is our call to enjoy our unique islander lifestyle through an immersive sensory experience.

Get to know the history of Mauritius

Lovers of sugar and history, the Aventure du Sucre remains the flagship destination for the island's sugar culture.

Live and taste our island’s rich past, enticed by the sweetest fragrance of all. Your holidays will take you on a tour of l’Aventure du Sucre, an iconic museum which tells the story of the Mauritian sugarcane industry in a fun way, with interactive tools. This visit is the perfect occasion to sample various types of sugar, but also delicious traditional treats such as our famous banana pie and Napolitaines.

Adult palates will also travel even further thanks to the wafting aroma of prime agricultural rum, as they tour the domaine’s distillery for an unforgettable tasting experience. Back at the hotel, the international award-winning distillery’s rums await… And there are many ways to enjoy them. From mixology classes to rum arrangé workshops to bring home a piece of Mauritian know-how, there are options for every taste.

Island flavours are best enjoyed in a traditional feast

The experience of the aperitif at sunset.

There is no such thing as “just barbecue” in Mauritius. A grilled meal is the opportunity to party al fresco. Every week, we invite you on the beach at sundown to partake in this welcoming tradition. The celebration starts with a sunset aperitive… And when the night falls, the bonfire calls. Delicious meats sizzle and the Sega band sets the tone, so that there is no other choice but to get up and dance!

A typical Mauritian day

Learn Creole to know the culture of the island.

This day of island Dolce Vita invites you to connect with the Mauritian culture to the upbeat rhythm of local music, with a buffet of deliciously authentic cuisine.

This slow-paced day is the perfect opportunity to discover a book by a Mauritian author at our library, discover our Koz Kreol workshop and learn a few words of our melodious native language, or even discover and learn how to play the Ravanne, a Mauritian percussion. You will also get to meet talented Mauritian craftsmen who will show you their creations.

Sea you on the other side

Along the water, and live like a fisherman for a day.

Embrace the life of a Zanfan lakot (a child of the coastal region). Make the most of our beachfront hotels and the seaside joy they bring, with your hair sporting natural beach waves filled with tiny crystals of salt and sun-kissed, glowy skin. Adventurers will enjoy exploring the lagoon by snorkeling or during a traditional fishing expedition at dawn. Lovers of farniente will take to the sea to enjoy an aperitive whilst gliding on the lagoon at sunset… But always on board a pirogue, the traditional fishing boats used by generations of fishermen for centuries.

More sides of our island you can discover in all our small boutique-hotels. These experiences are also completed with unique experiences (one per hotel) inspired by the unique assets of their respective regions.

And here you are, at the close of an authentic, stunning holiday, a Mauritian at heart.

Onward to vacations and relaxation.

Ready to discover a new facet of Mauritius

At Veranda Resorts, immerse yourself in the vibrant culture and authentic charm of our hotels, enhanced by the rhythmic allure of our traditional dance, the Sega, for a truly unique Mauritius experience.

Veranda Grand Baie’s culinary concept unveiled by Darren

posted by Elodie Ova 26th July 2023 0 comments

So, who is Darren? you may ask. Originally from France, this lively young man in his thirties moved to Mauritius years ago to study hotel management.

His passion for food and mixology makes him the perfect candidate to take on the position of Operations Manager – F&B for our new Creole Chic address!

Let’s discover without further delay what Darren and his team are concocting for you, our dear soon-to-be guests:

Can you tell us more about the culinary experience our guests will live at Veranda Grand Baie?

The culinary experience will be both simple and chic, in line with the Creole-Chic atmosphere that will reign at Veranda Grand Baie. Through our two restaurants, two bars and our dedicated Feel Mauritius. Feel Mauritian kiosk, which is the cornerstone of this renovation, the aim will be to highlight our local know-how and our tropical lifestyle… the Mauritian way. Emphasis will also be put on the quality and local origin of the products.

How will the Creole-Chic atmosphere be reflected in the restaurants and service?

The two restaurants & bars will be quite distinct from each other. Thus, we will be able to offer our guests a variety of dishes and beverages in line with the Creole-Chic atmosphere of the hotel, in different places with unique ambiances, each of them enhancing the Mauritian culture by highlighting local products and bringing a touch of refinement.

Let me give you an example. Let’s take La Varangue, our bar associated with the main restaurant! In the island life, the varangue is a privileged place of life in a Creole house. Always located in front of a luxuriant garden, it is always the corner of the house where one relaxes under the sun. From the chesterfield armchair to the creole armchair, La Varangue will reflect through its decor, the history of the island.

And what about the food options?

Mauritian cuisine has a 300-year history, with a multitude of influences brought by different cultures. Deer and sugar cane were brought by the Dutch. The French left their cooking methods, in “daube” and “civet”. Pierre Poivre brought many spices like cinnamon. The English and their Indian workers brought the famous curry, and finally, the Chinese introduced the wok! All these influences gave birth to a rich, varied and above all exceptional cuisine.
At Veranda Grand Baie, we wish to honor this multicultural heritage. From breakfast to dinner, through afternoon tea and daytime snacks, each meal will be an opportunity for the guest to soak up the soul of Mauritius.

Can you give us a taste of this Mauritian menu?

Our beach restaurant “Lazy Lobster”, overlooking Grand Baie, will be a sensory awakening! Here, our Chefs will showcase their know-how by revisiting Mauritian classics such as the famous lobster bisque or the Mauritian style “VIELLE GRISE” fish salad. This casual yet refined restaurant will be the ideal place to enjoy an unpretentious and simple cuisine, where local ingredients will be honored & tasted with appetite, for sure!

Finally, what emotions and feelings will guests be experiencing at Veranda Grand Baie?
The welcoming at Veranda Grand Baie will be warm and sincere, in a relaxed and family atmosphere recreating the atmosphere of a Mauritian plantation house and our culinary experiences will be carefully designed to awaken the five senses of our guests, so that they live a unique holistic experience, facing the bay of Grand Baie!

A relaxing atmosphere in a refined setting

A tropical oasis at the heart of Grand Baie

Inspired by typical creole guesthouses, this hotel and its private beach provide guests with a peaceful haven!
