Hello Jean Gino, could you tell us a bit about your journey?

I took my first steps in hospitality twenty-two years ago, guided by a genuine passion for service and human connection. This profession has taken me to several establishments, both in Mauritius and abroad, where I learned that excellence is born from consistency and heart. Each experience has been a valuable lesson, helping me refine my vision, understand the inner workings of hospitality, and above all, remain true to my values.

What first inspired you to join this industry?

It all began with a decisive encounter with a passionate hotel director. The way he spoke about his profession with such enthusiasm and sincerity , left a deep impression on me. That’s when I realised I wanted to be part of this world, where every gesture contributes to creating unforgettable memories for others.

As a Hotel Manager, what do you love most about your job today?

What inspires me most is that moment when a guest leaves with a smile, satisfied with their stay. Knowing that, in one way or another, we’ve contributed to their happiness is an immense source of pride. Each day brings a new opportunity to make a difference, no matter how small.

You’ve worked in several hotels, both in Mauritius and abroad. What makes Veranda Palmar Beach unique in your eyes?

How would you describe your relationship with your team?

I believe in a relationship built on respect, trust, and recognition. My role is to guide and support them, but also to keep learning alongside them. The success of a hotel relies first and foremost on the strength of its team.

What advice would you give to a young person who dreams of becoming a Hotel Manager one day?

Stay curious, humble, and determined. Every day is an opportunity to learn and grow. Listen to others, pay attention to every detail, and always remember that the guest should be at the centre of every decision you make.

In your opinion, what determines the success of a hotel?

The success of a hotel lies in a delicate balance between place, team, and attitude. A beautiful setting means little without an engaged and passionate team. When motivated people work in an inspiring environment, magic naturally follows.

What is the most meaningful compliment a guest has ever given you about the hotel?

A guest once told me: “Here, you don’t feel like a tourist you feel like a guest among friends.” That’s exactly what we strive to create for everyone who walks through our doors. That sense of belonging, genuine hospitality, and closeness is at the heart of our philosophy.

And how do you ensure that the level of service remains high, day after day?

The key lies in continuous training, active listening, and valuing our teams. A happy and appreciated staff member will naturally give their best. That balance is what allows us to maintain a level of service that’s both consistent and authentic.

If a guest had only 48 hours to discover Mauritius, what would you recommend?

I would suggest starting with a pirogue ride in the lagoon, then savouring some local cuisine, strolling through a traditional market, and ending the day watching the sunset on Belle Mare beach. These are simple moments, yet profoundly Mauritian.

I enjoy hiking, reading, and spending time with my family. These simple moments help me recharge and maintain balance, both essential to giving my best every day.

Empathy, discipline, and the desire to do things well. The rest can be learned over time and through experience, but these qualities are, in my view, fundamental for anyone who wishes to grow in hospitality.

On a scale of 1 to 10, how lucky do you consider yourself?

Ten, without hesitation. I have the privilege of doing a job I love, surrounded by wonderful people, in an exceptional setting. Honestly, what more could one ask for?

Hello Ian, could you tell us a bit about your journey? How did you begin in the hospitality industry, and what have been the key milestones along the way?

I discovered hospitality at a very young age, during school holidays, working as a waiter, entertainer, or receptionist in different establishments across the island. Those early experiences were a revelation — I instantly loved the human connection, the energy of the profession, and the joy of creating pleasant moments for others.

This passion naturally led me to pursue studies in this field. I obtained a bachelor’s degree and then an MBA in Resort Management at Vatel Mauritius – Hotel & Tourism Business School, which gave me both an operational and strategic understanding of hospitality.

Afterwards, I had the opportunity to work in several establishments in Mauritius, France, and the United States. These international experiences greatly enriched me, both professionally and personally. They taught me to adapt to different cultures, to lead diverse teams, and above all, to always put the guest at the heart of every decision.

Today, at 32 years old, I am proud to be the Hotel Manager of Veranda Paul et Virginie Hotel & Spa. It’s a place that truly reflects who I am — genuine, serene, and deeply focused on the guest experience. My journey is the result of hard work, great passion, and a bit of luck too, the kind that comes from meeting the right people at the right time.

What initially made you want to join this industry? Was there a particular encounter, experience, or moment when you thought, “This is what I want to do”?

What drew me to hospitality, above all, was the human connection. From my very first experiences during the school holidays, I felt genuine joy in creating unique moments for guests, contributing to their memories, and working in a lively, multicultural environment.

I was also captivated by the atmosphere of hotels — that constant energy, the pursuit of excellence, and the ability to transform a simple stay into a memorable experience. Very quickly, I understood that this profession goes far beyond service. It is a true art of welcoming, one that requires listening, adaptability, and creativity every day. This passion, combined with my desire to grow and contribute to meaningful projects, naturally led me to study in this field and make it my career.

As a Hotel Manager, what do you love most about your job today? What still gives you the same drive every morning?

What I love most about my work is bringing joy — both to our guests and to my team. Nothing is more rewarding than seeing a guest leave with a smile or a team member proud of what they have achieved. These are the moments that remind me of the true essence of hospitality.

I place great importance on the atmosphere within the team. I enjoy creating a positive environment where everyone feels heard, recognised, and valued. When team members are fulfilled, it naturally reflects in the guests’ experience.

It’s this collective energy — this harmony between the team and our guests — that motivates me every morning to give my very best.

How would you describe your relationship with your team? What values guide your approach to management daily?

I would say it’s above all a relationship built on trust, respect, and proximity. I try to be present, attentive, and to create an environment where everyone feels heard and valued. For me, a motivated and fulfilled team is the key to delivering genuine, high-quality service.

I deeply believe in teamwork, in recognition, and in celebrating the small everyday achievements. My role is also to nurture talent, to give meaning to what we accomplish together, and to remind everyone that each role, each person, holds essential value.

As I often like to say: “A hotel doesn’t run because of its walls, but because of the people who work within them — with heart.”

What advice would you give to a young person who dreams of becoming a Hotel Manager one day?

“Start small but think big.”

I began as a waiter, entertainer, and receptionist during school holidays. Those early, hands-on experiences helped me understand the true reality of the profession and appreciate every aspect of it.

My advice would be to stay curious, remain humble, and learn from every position — even the simplest ones. It’s important to pursue formal training, but developing your sense of humanity is even more essential.

Hospitality is a profession driven by passion, discipline, and heart. And in the end, it’s always the people who make the difference.

In your opinion, what determines the success of a hotel? Is it a matter of location, team, or attitude — or a bit of all three?

The location attracts, that’s true. But it’s the people who make guests return. An engaged, well-trained, and fulfilled team is what transforms a simple stay into a memorable experience.

Attitude makes all the difference — kindness, attention to detail, and a genuine smile. It’s those small, daily gestures that leave a lasting impression.

A beautiful hotel can impress. But a truly human hotel touches the heart. And that’s where real loyalty begins.

What is the most beautiful compliment a guest has ever given you about the hotel?

“Here, you feel at home… only better.”

Through her words, we discover not only an accomplished professional, but also a woman driven by a passion for service and a deep sense of connection — to her team, her guests, and her island.

Hello Elodie, could you tell us a bit about your journey? How did you begin in hospitality, and what have been the key stages leading to where you are today?

“At first, I wasn’t destined for hospitality,” Elodie says with a smile. “I began studying to become a pilot in civil aviation, but that project didn’t work out. I then tried studying law in France, before realising that it wasn’t my path.”

Upon returning to Mauritius, she took time to reflect on her future. It was ultimately in Bali, at Club Med, that everything changed. “Jean-Benoît Nisin, whom I greet warmly, recruited me as a GO animator and entrusted me with managing teenagers, with a focus on water sports. That experience was a revelation — I discovered my passion for hospitality and human connection.”

Driven by that newfound calling, Elodie decided to pursue studies at Vatel, before gaining experience in prestigious establishments both in Mauritius and abroad — from the Caribbean to the French Alps, including a rewarding stint with the Maison Paul Bocuse. “With my MBA in hand, I joined Veranda Paul & Virginie, and later continued the journey at Veranda Grand Baie, where I now hold the position of Hotel Manager.”

Each stage, she says, has been a lesson in itself: “I’ve learned discipline, attentiveness, and the passion for service. And even today, I keep learning every day — from my team and from our guests.”

What first inspired you to join this industry? Was there a specific encounter, experience, or moment when you realised: ‘This is what I want to do’?

“It all began with the desire to create happiness around me. Hospitality is a profession of emotion. We welcome, we share, we help people discover our culture and our sense of hospitality. That warmth immediately spoke to me.”

She also recalls the mentors who shaped her approach to service: “Very early in my career, I was fortunate to meet passionate leaders who passed on their sense of precision and excellence. They taught me that in hospitality, ‘good enough’ is never enough. Their dedication left a lasting impression on me — and that’s when I knew I wanted to grow in this field.”

As a Hotel Manager, what do you love most about your job today? What still gives you the same drive every morning?

People. My team, our guests, our partners are what give true meaning to my work. I love creating an environment where everyone feels valued, heard, and purposeful. When a team member grows, or when a guest leaves with a smile, I know my day has been a success.

For Elodie, hospitality is a living, ever-evolving world. “What I love is seeing the hotel come alive — to feel it vibrate and breathe. No two days are ever the same: there’s always a new challenge, a new story, a new encounter.”

You’ve worked in several hotels — in Bali, the Caribbean, and the French Alps. What makes Veranda Grand Baie unique to you?

Having worked in such diverse destinations, Elodie understands the richness and variety of the hospitality world. Yet, no place inspires her quite like Veranda Grand Baie.

For Elodie, a hotel’s success rests first and foremost on the strength of its people. “The relationship I share with my team is built on trust, respect, and listening. Everyone has their place, their voice, and their value. I make sure that each person feels they are part of a shared journey.”

Her management style fully reflects her values. “Humility, kindness, and consistency guide each of my decisions. You can’t expect from others what you don’t show yourself. I try to stay close to the field, to listen before acting, and to recognise every effort — big or small.”

What advice would you give to a young person who dreams of becoming a Hotel Manager one day?

To those aspiring to this role, Elodie shares a heartfelt message: “Stay curious, patient, and passionate. This career is built over time — and with a lot of heart.”

She emphasises the importance of genuine motivation: “If you choose this path for the title or the status, it won’t work. Hospitality is first and foremost about people and human connection — one cannot exist without the other.”

And she concludes with a touch of wisdom: “You must love to learn, to question yourself, and to remember that every experience — even the difficult ones — brings a valuable lesson.”

In your opinion, what determines the success of a hotel? Is it a matter of place, team, or attitude — or a bit of all three?

For Elodie, a hotel’s success depends on a delicate balance. “It’s a mix of attitude, teamwork, and authenticity,” she explains. “A beautiful property is important, but without passionate people to bring it to life, it remains empty. A positive and genuine attitude makes all the difference.”

What is the most meaningful compliment a guest has ever given you about the hotel?

Outside of work, how do you like to spend your time? Is there a passion, ritual, or activity that helps you recharge?

Outside of work, Elodie values simplicity and genuine moments. “I like to enjoy the essentials — spending time with the people I care about, walking in nature, sleeping under the stars, or sailing at sea,” she says.

She is also involved in volunteer work for animal protection and has supported sanctuaries around the world — experiences that bring her back to what truly matters. “These shared moments, in nature or with the people I love, are what really recharge me. I don’t need much — a sunset, the sound of the waves, the laughter of friends… and everything feels perfect.”

Before concluding, she adds softly: “The sea remains my refuge. Its serenity reminds me every day why I love Mauritius so much — and the life it allows me to live.”
