Are you planning a trip to Mauritius but unsure about the best time to visit weather-wise? Here’s everything you need to know about Mauritius’s climate to help you choose the ideal dates for your vacation and prepare for your stay.

GENERAL CLIMATE IN MAURITIUS

Mauritius enjoys a tropical climate with two main seasons: the Austral summer and the Austral winter.

The Austral Summer in Mauritius

Austral summer extends from October to April, with slight variations. In October, November, and December, the daytime heat reaches up to 28°C (82°F), while the evenings remain pleasant. During this period, the ocean warms to around 26°C (79°F), perfect for swimming. December is typically warm and dry, while January, February, and March are the hottest and most humid months, with temperatures around 30°C (86°F) and water temperatures rising to 28°C (82°F). In April, conditions become drier, the intense heat subsides, evenings are cooler, and ocean temperatures remain about 26°C (79°F).

The Austral Winter in Mauritius

Austral winter runs from May to September, with average daytime temperatures around 25°C (77°F). Evenings and nights are cooler, particularly in the island’s center, where temperatures can drop to 15°C (59°F). However, days remain mild and sunny, perfect for exploring the island or relaxing by the sea, where water temperatures stay pleasant at around 24°C (75°F).

REGIONAL OVERVIEW

Le lac sacrée de Grand Bassin

Mauritius’s climate can vary depending on where you stay. Here’s a look at the key areas:

  • The North Coast: Home to Veranda Grand Baie and Veranda Paul et Virginie, this coast has warm temperatures and gentle breezes, making it an ideal year-round destination. It’s also one of the island’s driest regions.
  • The East Coast: Where Veranda Palmar Beach is located, this coast is exposed to trade winds, providing a refreshing breeze, especially from January to March. This is an excellent option if you prefer a light sea breeze during the warmest months.
  • The South Coast: Also breezy, the south coast is ideal for travelers seeking a cooler climate during the hot months.
  • The West Coast: Home to Veranda Tamarin, this coast is sheltered from the wind and has very warm temperatures, perfect for beachside relaxation. This region is ideal for water activities or sunbathing in the summer.
  • The Central Highlands: Cooler and rainier than the coastal areas, the highlands around Curepipe or Plaine Champagne offer lush nature. Although fewer travelers stay here, it’s perfect for nature lovers exploring the island’s verdant landscape.

RAIN AND CYCLONES IN MAURITIUS

Rain and Cyclones in Mauritius

As a tropical country, Mauritius experiences tropical rains. During summer, particularly between January and March, sudden and sometimes intense showers can occur, especially in mountainous areas and the east coast. However, these rains are usually brief and followed by long sunny periods, allowing visitors to continue outdoor activities with minimal disruption.

Cyclone season spans from January to March, but the risk of major storms remains low. Mauritius is well-prepared, and most cyclones pass at a distance, usually resulting in heavy rains and mild winds without severe impact. Local infrastructure, including hotels like Veranda Resorts, follows established safety protocols to protect residents and tourists. Guests are informed in advance of any warnings, but in most cases, it simply involves staying indoors temporarily. The climate remains favorable for a serene vacation, even during this period.

MAURITIUS: A PARADISE WITH AN AUSTRAL CLIMATE

With its temperate tropical climate, Mauritius is an ideal destination year-round. Whether you choose to visit during the warm summer or the milder winter, Mauritius offers a unique experience. Each region has its microclimate, allowing travelers to select the area that best suits their preferences.

The 5 Must-Try Sino-Mauritian Dishes That Will Delight Your Taste Buds

posted by Elodie Ova 30th June 2023 0 comments

Mauritius, a true crossroads of cultures, saw a rich wave of Chinese immigration in the late 19th century, with immigrants mainly from southeast China, particularly from the Canton province. Bringing with them their culinary traditions, these pioneers enriched the island’s gastronomic soul, giving birth to a unique Sino-Mauritian cuisine that blends oriental flavors with local influences. Today, this cuisine has become a source of national pride, appreciated for its diversity and refinement. Join us on a culinary journey through the 5 must-try Sino-Mauritian dishes that will awaken your taste buds and introduce you to the very essence of this cultural fusion.

Fried Noodles (Mine Frit)

Mauritian Fried Noodles

“Mine Frit,” or fried noodles, is undoubtedly the most iconic Chinese dish in Mauritius. This delicious meal consists of noodles perfectly fried and typically garnished with tender pieces of chicken breast. The diversity of Sino-Mauritian cuisine allows for a personal touch by adding pork, beef, shrimp, or Chinese sausages. To enhance this symphony of flavors, the dish is complemented by crunchy carrots, cabbage, Chinese greens, bean sprouts, and eggs prepared as a light omelet. A sprinkle of chives crowns it all. Each ingredient is carefully stir-fried in a smoking hot wok, infused with soy sauce and a subtle hint of red wine. This Mauritian classic is a true feast for the senses, combining texture, color, and unforgettable taste.

Upside-Down Bowl (Bol Renversé)

The Bol Renversé is a mysterious and fascinating dish that sparks curiosity as soon as it’s placed on the table. Its charm lies in the surprise it holds, as it is only when the bowl is lifted that its treasures are revealed. The main ingredients of a proper Bol Renversé are carefully selected: savory oyster sauce, rich soy sauce, tender chicken breast, fragrant Chinese sausages, and crunchy vegetables such as carrots, Chinese cabbage, and mushrooms. The dish is accompanied by perfectly cooked eggs and fluffy white rice. Under the bowl, a meticulously arranged dish is revealed, where the egg crowns a delicious preparation of meats and vegetables in sauce, forming a harmonious ensemble of colors and flavors. This dish invites you to immediately dig in and discover what lies beneath the elegant presentation. Bon appétit!

Sweet and Sour Fish

Sweet and Sour Fish

Sino-Mauritian cuisine is full of surprises, inviting us on a culinary journey where unexpected flavors meet. Sweet and sour fish is the perfect example, offering a bold culinary experience that harmoniously marries acidity and sweetness. The main ingredient, a fresh fish fried to perfection in a hot wok, is then stir-fried with juicy pineapple chunks, crunchy bell peppers, and soft tomatoes. This colorful and textural symphony is simmered in an exquisite sauce made from vinegar, sugar, and a hint of red chili, creating a delicate balance between spiciness and sweetness. This dish is a true discovery for the taste buds, a culinary adventure that will pleasantly surprise you.

Three Delights Chicken

Its name immediately evokes the Seven Wonders of the World, and it never fails to amaze anyone who spots it on a restaurant menu. This enchanting dish lives up to its name, thanks to the perfect harmony of its carefully selected ingredients: earthy dried Chinese mushrooms, tender chicken breast, crunchy bamboo shoots, slightly bitter Chinese greens, sweet onions, tapioca, soy sauce, sugar, and vibrant green bell peppers. The preparation of this dish is a true art. Each ingredient is stir-fried separately in a wok, allowing the individual flavors to be preserved and intensified. The chicken is golden brown, while the onions and peppers are lightly caramelized. The mushrooms, greens, and bamboo shoots are then added to complete this symphony of tastes and textures. Finally, all the ingredients are quickly cooked together in a creamy sauce made from tapioca, soy sauce, sugar, and salt, creating a dish worthy of being considered one of the wonders of the culinary world.

Shrimp Foo Yang

The name of this dish, Foo Yang, immediately evokes a journey to Indonesia, where the expression literally means “lotus eggs.” This delicate dish is centered around eggs but also features crunchy bean sprouts, bamboo shoots, Chinese cabbage, spring onions, mushrooms, and water chestnuts that add a unique texture. The star ingredient, of course, is shrimp, which brings a delicate marine flavor to the dish. The preparation begins by whisking the eggs with salt, sugar, and soy sauce to give them a subtle and balanced flavor. Meanwhile, the vegetables and shrimp are stir-fried in a wok, releasing their intoxicating aromas. The beaten eggs are then poured into the wok and gently mixed until the mixture reaches a firm and flavorful consistency. This dish, as simple as it is exquisite, is a true ode to the art of Sino-Mauritian cuisine.

Tina Staub, an athlete with a big heart

posted by Elodie Ova 24th October 2022 0 comments

Story by Veranda Resorts

On October 27, a young Mauritian woman full of talent and courage is getting ready to jump into the ocean to achieve a remarkable feat that will undoubtedly leave you breathless… This athlete, not to say mermaid, is going to complete a round Mauritius swim on the high sea in only 9 days, which means 200 kilometers for an average of 8 hours of swimming per day.

But for what purpose? you may ask. Tina is planning to make the most of her muscles and mental strength for a cause that is close to her heart, namely muscular dystrophy. The Mauritian athlete wants to raise awareness of this genetic disease and hopes to raise funds for the Muscular Dystrophy Association Mauritius. The funds raised will enable children with this disease who have recently developed scoliosis to undergo an operation that will improve their quality of life.

Veranda Resorts is proud to support this cause, which is in line with the ‘inclusive development‘ pillar of our Now For Tomorrow sustainability pact. Each hotel has not hesitated to join in by participating as an accommodation sponsor at different stages of the tour. We would also like to allow our hotel guests to donate to the online fund which will be open from the first stage.

For Vincent Cavalot, Chief Operations Officer of Veranda Resorts, Tina Staub’s initiative is in line with the hotel group’ values of respect, hospitality, and solidarity.  “We are very proud to be associated with this highly commendable initiative. Our teams will follow Tina Staub’s progress daily with great attention and look forward to welcoming her in each of our hotels.  By supporting projects such as this, we want to create a more equitable and inclusive environment for all.

Ultra Swim Mauritius 200 Km round the island

A short introduction to this devoted athlete

Since you were young have you always been attracted to water?

I must say that the unleashed power of the sea has always attracted me. I grew up in the heart of the island, so I was far away from it, with no means of transport to get there except for a family picnic. When I started high school, I was lucky enough to attend the Loreto Convent in Rose Hill which offered a swimming class every Thursday that was a real treat for me and my first real connection with the water.  Once I got a car, after every storm, I headed south to watch the waves.

Let’s talk about your sports achievements, do you have any figures in mind?

I have a few long swims that I am particularly fond of…

First, my first long distance, where I completed 15.47km of high sea crossing from Le Morne to La Preneuse by swimming in the Ambulante pass and the La Preneuse pass in 6h50. I also swam 20 km over a period of 12 hours in the high sea from Pointe aux Sables to Flic en Flac or from Le Morne to Pointe aux Sables in 9 hours over 30 km. Finally, last July I swam for 9 days in a row! I accumulated 142.43 km of swimming in 68 hours.

We can certainly talk about sports accomplishments, but as far as I’m concerned, I do not place much importance on the performance part. It is about experiences and feelings that I want to live intensely.

What would be your most intense memory?

Swimming with Lilian Eymeric, my mentor on this project, in the high sea near the Coin de Mire with waves of over 4 meters. Thrills guaranteed!  At the end of the swim, we were visited by about 20 dolphins.

What would be your most challenging memory?

Without any hesitation the 7th day of my 9-day swim challenge last July… I had to swim 12 hours in a row in an 18-degree pool. It’s already very complex to go back and forth for 12 hours in a pool… so the freshness of the water and the lack of sunlight was not easy to manage. I was on the verge of hypothermia. It takes mental strength and determination to get through it!

And the nicest one?

All these memories are incredible for me because by living these experiences to the fullest I always learn something about myself and about life.

What do you expect from this swimming exploit?

With the sea you must expect a lot! For me, you just must be in harmony with the element and live in the moment. I do everything under my control with the sole expectation of arriving serenely at the start line and completing the swim in the same state of mind.

How are the trainings going?

Great! Everything is falling into place. I feel good in my body and in my head. The training sessions are just as important as the challenge itself, if not more so. That’s when everything falls into place when you learn as much as possible.

How do you feel a few days before D-day?

I can’t believe we’re already talking about ‘a few days’ before the start. I have a mixture of positive stress, excitement, joy and satisfaction. The year has gone very well, and everything has been well organized up to now. I feel good and I think that with all the support around me, I’m going to have a really great experience.

Do you have a specific route in mind?

I’m doing some mental visualization work and my husband, and I have it well structured. We are lucky enough to be able to see everything on Google Earth. With several experiences of swimming in the high sea, I can see what to expect, although I’m not going to use the word precise because nothing is precise at sea. What is precise in my mind is that my degree of adaptation must be at the maximum level.

Which part do you fear the most?

I work on myself mentally so that I don’t dread anything. I want to keep my inner peace in all circumstances. The sea surrounds us, and I want to be one with it during the challenge no matter what the conditions are.

What is the good cause behind this swim?

There are so many! I would like to tell the whole of Mauritius that we may be a small island, but we can aspire to be big. I would like to tell everyone not to be afraid to dream and to do whatever it takes to make those dreams come true. I would like to tell young people how important sport is for the balance of a life. I would like to tell women that we can achieve our wildest dreams, we just must believe in ourselves. I would like to tell people with muscular dystrophy that everything does not stop at the wheelchair because our minds are full of abilities. I would like to tell everyone to protect the ocean, to take a small step each day to act towards its protection because without the ocean, we are nothing…
